Judo information..

JUDO was derived from the ancient martial art of Ju Jitsu by Jigoro Kano from Japan. It is now a Worldwide combat sport and part of the Olympics.

JUDO translated into English means 'gentle art' or way. In kata form (a pre arranged set of moves) it does look gentle but in competition it can still look like an effective self defence.

JUDO comprises a range of throws, hold downs, arm locks, chokes and strangles. some of which could have serious consequences. For this reason players have great respect for each other on the mat, probably more than any other sport, and will immediately release a technique should the opponent submit.

The principals used to throw an opponent is maximum efficiency minimum effort, not always possible in competition where strength can be important too. An opponent can be easy to throw when they are off balance, such as when walking towards you, when the leading foot is about to reach the ground, this can be swept away and the opponent will start to fall down. To complete the throw you will have to use your arms with a good grip to turn them onto their back.
