Proud moment: Carlisle’s David Hughes, left, with winner Gazimagomed Akhmedov (Russia) and bronze medalists Peter Lkammer of Germany and Tom Moyse of England

David’s bronze came in his age and weight category, up to 81kgm, after he lost in a very closely-fought contest to the eventual gold medal winner from Austria.

He then fought a Belgium to take the bronze medal.

Three days later, he entered the open-weight category and was probably the lightest contestant in the field. David went on to win a silver medal

having beaten his Russian opponent who was at least 30 kg heavier. He had defeated two other Russians in the previous rounds.

He is now targeting gold in next year’s world masters championship in USA.
